Before any cadet can go shooting, all cadets have to carry out basic safety training and learn range procedure, which culminates in a final exam which has to be past before a cadet can fire a weapon. (In fact, cadets and staff have to re-qualify every twelve months). Cadets are taught and supervised by experienced and qualified instructors.
The squadron has a variety of .22 rimfire rifles, but mostly uses the No. 8 bolt action rifle, which is the weapon used in the cadets basic training. We also use the cadet GP rifle (L98A1), which is the cadet version of the SA80, and the L81A2, a bolt action rifle which has just come back into general service.
